In a music industry often driven by trends, Gary Porter stands apart through authenticity, heartfelt storytelling, and timeless songwriting. His latest indie soul single, "Rise Up," delivers a powerful message of resilience, hope, and unity, resonating with listeners through its emotional honesty. In this exclusive 9Lounges interview, Gary shares the inspiration behind the song, his creative process, and the journey that continues to shape his music.

The Story Behind "Rise Up": "Rise Up" carries a strong message of resilience and hope. What personal experiences or moments in your life inspired you to write this song?

"Rise Up" came from reflecting on life's ups and downs and recognizing that every one of us faces moments when we question ourselves or feel overwhelmed. Like most people, I've had periods where I've had to dig deep, keep believing, and find a way forward. The song isn't about one specific event; it's about that shared human experience of refusing to give up. I wanted to write something that reminds people that hope is always there, even when it's difficult to see.

Finding the Inspiration: The lyrics reflect both individual struggles and wider social issues. Was there a particular event or observation that influenced the direction of the song?

I've always been inspired by what's happening around us as much as what's happening within us. We live in a world where decisions made by a few can have enormous consequences for many, and at the same time ordinary people are quietly showing incredible resilience every day. Those contrasts naturally found their way into the song. I wanted it to acknowledge the realities we face without becoming cynical, because I still believe hope and compassion are stronger than fear.

The Pinstripe Suit: One of the most memorable lines mentions "a man in a pinstripe suit" changing lives "with a stroke of his pen". What does that imagery represent to you, and what message were you hoping listeners would take from it?

That line represents power and responsibility. It isn't aimed at one individual or one profession; it's about anyone in a position where their decisions affect other people's financial lives. We often forget how much impact those choices can have. At the same time, the lyric is also a reminder that ordinary people have power too. We may not sign laws or run governments, but we can still influence the lives of those around us through kindness, courage and standing up for what we believe is right.

From Individual Struggles to Collective Hope: As the song progresses, it shifts from personal reflection to a broader call for unity. Was that transition intentional from the beginning, or did it develop naturally during the writing process?

It developed quite naturally. The song began as a personal reflection, but the more I wrote, the more I realised these emotions weren't unique to me. We all experience doubt, loss, hope and renewal. That naturally opened the door to a bigger message that we come through difficult times more effectively when we support each other. By the end of the song, it felt right that the focus moved from "me" to "us".

What "Rise Up" Means: The chorus encourages everyone to "Rise up and let your heart sing out with mine." What does "rising up" mean to you on a personal level today?

For me, rising up isn't about fighting against people; it's about rising above fear, negativity and self-doubt. It's choosing hope over despair and compassion over division. Every day gives us another opportunity to become a better version of ourselves, and sometimes simply getting back up after life knocks you down is the bravest thing you can do.

Honest Songwriting: Your songwriting feels refreshingly honest and emotionally direct. How do you strike a balance between personal storytelling and creating songs that connect with a wide audience?

I've always believed that the more honest you are, the more universal a song becomes. I might begin with something personal, but I try to write in a way that leaves space for listeners to bring their own experiences to it. If someone hears a lyric and feels like it somehow belongs to them, then I've done my job. Music is at its most powerful when it creates that connection.

Creating the Sound: The organic indie soul sound perfectly complements the lyrics. How did you approach the production and arrangement to ensure the message remained at the forefront?

The most important thing was serving the song. We deliberately avoided overcomplicating the arrangement because I wanted the lyrics and the emotion to lead the listener through the journey. Every instrument was chosen to support the story rather than compete with it. Sometimes the simplest musical choices allow the message to come through with the greatest impact.

A Lasting Message: What do you hope listeners feel or reflect on after hearing "Rise Up" for the first time?

More than anything, I hope they feel encouraged. If someone finishes listening feeling a little stronger, a little more hopeful, or simply reminded that they're not facing life's challenges alone, then the song has achieved what I hoped it would. Music has always been a source of comfort and inspiration for me, and if I can pass even a small part of that on to someone else, it's incredibly rewarding.

What's Next?: Looking ahead, does "Rise Up" represent the direction you're taking as an artist, and what can fans expect from Gary Porter in the coming months?

Absolutely. "Rise Up" reflects the kind of music I want to continue making, songs that are honest, uplifting and rooted in real life. I'm interested in telling stories that connect emotionally while still leaving listeners with a sense of optimism. There are more songs on the way, and I'm looking forward to sharing new music, performing live, and continuing to build that connection with people who find something meaningful in what I write.
