A DIY Journey from Texas to Today

Freddie Gibbs’ journey into music started like so many great stories—DIY at its core. With a Mel Bay guitar book in one hand and a pile of Nirvana CDs in the other, he taught himself to play, all while soaking up Zeppelin riffs, Ramones rebellion, and Pearl Jam’s introspection in his childhood home.

By 17, he left it all behind, chasing the dream of being on stage anywhere that would let him plug in and turn the volume up. That spirit of independence has carried into FGA’s music today, with songs often written and recorded entirely in his home studio.

Every so often, an artist comes along who doesn’t just play music—they live it. Enter FGA, the sonic brainchild of Freddie Gibbs, a Texas-born musician who fuses the raw grit of ‘90s alt-rock with modern heaviness. His upcoming EP, The Space Between Days, drops on September 5, 2025, and promises to be one of the year’s most compelling underground releases.

With five tracks rooted in personal life experiences, the EP captures the emotional tension of living in between moments—the struggles, the beauty, and the silence we often overlook.

The Sound of The Space Between Days

The EP blends fuzz-drenched guitars, grunge-era heartbreak, and a heavy modern edge. Its DNA is steeped in the spirit of alt-rock’s golden age, recalling influences like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, while still pushing into a space that feels fresh and urgent.

Adding to the record’s intensity is OK Go drummer Dan Konopka, whose unmistakable rhythms ground the songs with punch and power. The combination of Freddie’s multi-instrumental approach and Konopka’s drumming gives the project a unique balance of DIY vulnerability and polished execution.

A Revival of ’90s Energy for 2025

FGA isn’t just looking back at the past—he’s bringing the fire of the ‘90s into the present. The EP resurrects the unfiltered emotion of grunge and alt-rock but smashes it into something undeniably current.

This fusion has already caught the attention of indie music blogs and alternative radio stations, eager to highlight FGA’s gritty yet melodic sound. For fans of bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, or Stone Temple Pilots, FGA’s music feels like a natural extension of a beloved lineage.

The Stories Behind the Songs

Each of the five tracks on The Space Between Days reflects Freddie’s personal life experiences—moments of loneliness, resilience, questioning, and catharsis. The songs are raw, not just in sound but in storytelling.

Where some artists polish their edges away, FGA leans into the imperfections, allowing listeners to feel the vulnerability beneath the noise. This approach makes the EP a record for anyone who has ever been caught between one chapter of life and the next.
