Björn Schanz is one such artist, with decades of experience spanning gothic rock and synth-driven electronic music. His journey reflects a deep passion for atmospheric sound and artistic evolution. With “A Shadow From The Attic,” Schanz enters a cinematic space, transforming a real-life castle experience into a haunting story of loneliness, memory, history, and the longing to be heard.

The Inspiration Behind the Song: What first inspired you to write "A Shadow From The Attic," and how did your stay in the castle hotel transform into such a compelling musical story?

We went on a short vacation at a very small castle called „Burg Hermannstein“ built in the 14th century. Most of it is ruined, but you can stay there in one of only four rooms to rent. The owner of the castle told us what he knew about the history and gave us a guided tour. He also allowed us to sneak through the ruins and we entered the upper castle. The knights room and the whole atmosphere was so amazing; there were loads of old stuff. At night I went out of our room to breathe the air, to capture the silence.

That very special moment - with the tower at my back and the beautiful view—was the inspiration for “A Shadow from the Attic.”

I thought about how it would be if a ghost is staying in the shadows for centuries, knowing all the secrets. How lonely he must be because no one can talk to him.

A Ghost With a Story: The song presents a ghost as a storyteller rather than a frightening presence. What drew you to this unique perspective on the supernatural?

When visiting this castle and thinking of a lonely ghost existing there, there had been no feelings of fear or a frightening presence. It was this feeling of longing and fading I wanted to share with the song - that’s what I would feel, if I were a ghost in an old castle I think.

Of course when thinking about ghosts or other supernatural beings, we get scared because of the unknown; it’s unfortunately a part of human being to be scared by what we don’t know. But what about a soul that lasts there for centuries, People come and go, but it can’t leave, can’t share anything? It will be lonely and sad, but why should it frighten visitors when it longs so much for a little talk to forget loneliness for a little while?

Exploring Memory & Loneliness: Many of the lyrics explore themes of memory, loneliness, and forgotten history. Was there a particular emotion or message you hoped listeners would connect with the most?

Loneliness and longings are existential components of our lives. Without them, we could not enjoy happy moments. Some experiences are so intense that they tear you inside, some fates you can't even process. But mostly it's the many little things that make you happy or unhappy. I think it's important to be able to allow these feelings. To surrender to this longing for a moment. Music reinforces these feelings, helps to let go. That is also my goal. In addition to the very own selfish purpose of processing my feelings, I hope that the listener can also let himself fall into my songs. In this case just into this bittersweet melancholy of loneliness.

The Meaning Behind the Lyrics: The line "Because walls can't tell, stories will be left untold" is especially powerful. Can you share the meaning behind this lyric and how it reflects the song's central theme?

This line is also my favorite one from this song besides "How dramatic! It's floating through the walls and through the doors."

The song is literally about loneliness, the longing of a ghost that can’t share its memories. So all these stories from centuries ago will be lost for mankind.

The line „because walls…“ has a similar meaning: So many things that happened behind them are long forgotten, lost forever because no-one talked about it. Both this line and the story of a lonely ghost stand for the longing to share all these little memories and tragedies that happen in a person's life. Not to be forgotten. I think this is the deeper central theme of this song: what will remain, when a person is gone?

Creating a Cinematic Soundscape: Your music creates a vivid cinematic atmosphere. How do you approach building a soundscape that allows listeners to feel as though they're stepping into the world of the song?

I don’t have a special system or scheme for how I compose songs. At "A Shadow from the Attic“ I wrote the lyrics first with a raw idea of the chorus, picked my acoustic guitar and started playing what came into mind. I recorded this idea and worked out the parts. During this process I felt that some "scary" ghostlike melodies are missing to give the song its depth, to make it complete. It was more a feeling that I wanted to express than thinking about what listeners may need to like the song.

I'm very happy that it obviously works, that listeners like the song because of its atmosphere and lyrics.

From Real Life to Songwriting: How do history, travel, and real-life experiences influence your songwriting, and do you often draw inspiration from places with rich historical significance?

It was the first time that a very specific place inspired me to write a text. That's also why it might be a special song for me. I actually always write about my own experiences or feelings like with "A Perfect Day or "Time" and "The Sun" (both from the first album). But there are also songs like "It's gettin´ Dark", which is about the increasing hatred and selfishness in our society. It repeats itself constantly as in a cycle. Hate, escalation, war, suffering, reconstruction, helping those in need, everyone is better, one becomes jealous, selfish, hatred, escalation, etc. ... Or "Cold", which is about a dystopian future.

Balancing Mystery & Emotion: Was there a particular challenge in balancing the song's emotional depth with its mysterious, atmospheric character during the writing or recording process?

Not really, the lyrics and the music were almost self-written. Most of the time there is a moment, almost always, when I record the vocals, when I despair and would like to delete everything and throw it away, that moment in which you are firmly convinced that you are absolutely untalented and everything is just dirt. But with "A Shadow from the Attic" it was different; I always came up with new ideas, different melodies for the backing vocals, etc. There was not this one (or sometimes several) moment of frustration. I think it was mainly because for me it was not about a mystical character, but rather about this "human" longing not to be alone, this endless loneliness that he has to feel.

A Personal Connection: Looking back at the finished version of "A Shadow From The Attic," is there a moment in the song that you're personally most proud of or that holds special meaning for you?

Personally, I especially like the part in the second chorus, which starts slowly and then rebuilds. I believe that the song itself is the most varied composition of the album "From the Attic". But actually the song as a whole is something special for me, because it reminds me every time I hear it of this stay in the castle and "brings back the emotions."

What Comes Next: What's next for you as an artist? Can fans expect more music that explores storytelling and cinematic themes, or are you planning to venture into new creative directions?

Yes, they can expect more coming soon, I’m planning to release a new album or EP at the end of 26/ the beginning of 27. I’ll start recording the first ideas soon. For now, I am not really sure what you can expect, what’s the result in the end of the process but there are one or two „storytellers“ in my head that are working out lyrics about the road to the afterlife and a song about a wasteland. Let`s see where they will end.
